Dearborn, Mich. (May 24, 2018) Scouts from BSA Troop 1104 and Cub Scouts from Pack 1112 recently volunteered their services to build raised garden beds for residents at Beaumont Commons, Dearborn.

“A group of us who enjoy gardening asked if there were some way our campus garden plots could be raised to make it easier for people who have limited mobility or can no longer easily bend down to plant and weed,” said resident Merritt Robertson, coordinator of resident gardens. “So we talked with staff who contacted the BSA Council in Detroit about our request. The Scouts came through for us.”

“We were glad to help, and we’re fortunate that Assistant Cub Master of Pack 1112, Rich Rodriguez, is a carpenter by trade,” said Joe Adams, Scout Master of Troop 1104. Several Scouts, Cubs, parents and siblings pitched in to help with measuring the wood and nailing boards in place along with weeding and shoveling soil.

Resident gardeners also came out to assist, observe and enjoyed working alongside the young helpers. They made sure the Scouts went home with boxes of oven-baked pizzas from the campus Bistro in appreciation for their help.

“Later in the season after everything is planted and blooms, we hope they can come back to see the results,” said Robertson.

Scout Master Adams shared that Troop 1104 has a busy summer ahead with lots of projects and summer camp outings planned. It is currently celebrating its 90th year of meeting at the First United Methodist Church of Dearborn. Cub Pack 1112, which also meets at the church, recently made news as the first Pack to include girls.
